Nth Degree Featuring:
Joe Angelino, EVP of Finance
What is your professional background?
I am a CPA that began my career in public accounting, specializing in real estate clients. After realizing how much I enjoyed real estate, I moved into accounting for institutional real estate investment advisors. During this time, my company was a big Near North commercial client, which is how I came to know the company and Dan Fowler, our CEO.
After some time, I joined Connaught Real Estate Finance as Dan’s Controller, and then CFO. Eventually, I became the CFO of Near North. Shortly after, an opportunity presented itself to join a private investment group focused on retail commercial real estate investment, which would allow me to gain international exposure, and I could not pass it up. I enjoyed visiting people all around the world.
When that role came to an end, I joined a private investment group start up and was the VP and Controller there for 7 years. We focused on acquiring and managing domestic and internal real estate related operated companies, which included companies in Mexico, Chile, Australia and Bora Bora. I ended up leaving right before the pandemic started and took a small hiatus. That’s when I received a call from Dan Fowler and took a consulting gig with Near North. In September, I joined the team full-time again as the Executive Vice President of Finance, and I’m excited to be back!
What is your role at Near North?
As the EVP of Finance, I analyze daily financial activities and provide advice and guidance to upper management on our future plans.
How do you and CFO, Evelyn Vela, work together?
Evelyn and I have a long relationship, which affords us the uncanny ability to work together. We each have a daily set of tasks. For example, I currently do AP, while Evelyn focuses her time on escrow. We find it beneficial to split big projects, so that we are able to support one another.
What three words would you use to describe Near North?
Dynamic, progressive, friendly.
What do you like most about your job?
The CEO’s vision provides a positive outlook for the company, which challenges me to want to build us a bright future.
Which qualities do you admire most of our leadership team?
Our leaders are open and honest communicators during our weekly meetings.
Personal Life/Free Time:
Outside of work, I like to spend my time surrounded by family. I am happily married to my wife of 20 years. We have three wonderful kids: one of which is in high school, and the other two are in junior high. I enjoy being active with my kids sports teams, and currently head up their softball organization. I am a proud member of the Knights of Columbus through my church, where I spend time doing charitable deeds.
